Motive and Inspiration

Following the Great Commission: Part Two

Every once in a while we get encouraged and revved up to do “great things for God”. But ironically being inspired is not the first or the most important thing.

In Luke 9, Jesus was talking to His disciples after sending them out with power to heal and drive out demons.

Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it.

Luke 9:23-24 NKJV

The disciples even after doing many great things had to be reminded that Christ is at the centre. Not just the centre of their mission together – which is to make his name known. But that Jesus should in fact be the centre of their daily lives.

This is important for us because doing “great things for God” without God is pointless. God doesn’t call us to do innumerable things without having a personal relationship with Him.

God wants to get to know you before He teaches you to help others to get to know Him. He wants someone who has an honest thirst to know God for who He is: Saviour, Father, Friend and much more.

Without this, all purists are in vain. And the truth is that one can never stop denying oneself and one can never fully know God. As God is endless and eternal and we have a built-in sinful nature which is why Christ asks us to daily deny ourselves in a constant surrender to the Life that He calls us to.

That is first step in finding what God has in store for us.
