Servant Lifestyle – God’s Employment Plan

Following the Great Commission: Part Three

We have established that we must have a personal relationship with God. But then what?

The disciples were debating who the greatest was among themselves and then Jesus spoke.

Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, ‘Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.’ He took a little child whom He placed among them. Taking the child in His arms, He said to them, ‘Whoever welcomes one of these little children in My name welcomes Me; and whoever welcomes Me does not welcome Me but the one who sent Me.’

Mark 9:35-37 NIV

Sometimes – if not most times – when we dream of doing “great things for God” we think of the Christian influencer, the missionary to the unreached tribes, the pastor’s wife. Our mind immediately aims for the title, the heard spaces, and the places where we think God is.

But Jesus says the opposite. He asks us to serve, to be the least, to care for the unseen.

Throughout all of time there have been numerous believers who have done “great things for God” whose names were never publicised, never recorded, all lost to the sands of time.

Even the silent labours of these silent labourers are heard and seen by God.

And God won’t always send us to where we think He is present. Sometimes He might place us in a dark place not only to test our relationship with Him but also that His Light might shine brighter. He might put us somewhere where no one can hear our cries of pain and exasperation to remind us to that even there He is with us and He hears.

God’s employment plan – for those who will serve Him with a pure heart for His will – does not promise promotion, a constant salary, publicity or even ease.

The servant lifestyle – for those who are willing to take up their cross daily – simply promises that He sees you and will be with you “to the very end of the age”. He only asks that you serve where He has placed you, living faithfully in the servant lifestyle.

May we open our hearts to His will.
